Early Orthodontic Treatment

Prevention Starts Early

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children schedule a complimentary orthodontic evaluation by age 7.

By age 7, enough permanent teeth have come in and enough jaw growth has occurred that he can identify existing concerns and anticipate future problems. Any ongoing damaging oral habits can be assessed at this time also. In many cases, no treatment is indicated at this age, but it is a great time to begin planning for future needs for the most efficient treatment plan by entering a growth and development program.

Some signs or habits that may indicate the need for an early orthodontic treatment are:

  • early or late loss of baby teeth,

  • difficulty in chewing or biting,

  • mouth breathing,

  • thumb sucking,

  • finger sucking,

  • crowding, misplaced or blocked out teeth,

  • jaws that shift or make sounds,

  • biting the cheek or roof of the mouth,

  • teeth that meet abnormally or not at all, and

  • jaws and teeth that are out of proportion to the rest of the face.

An evaluation with Dr. Lawless at age 7 will allow our team to detect orthodontic concerns and advise if treatment will be necessary. It will also give you the opportunity to begin forming a great relationship for you and your child at an early age with our team. You are part of our family, and we look forward to working with you for many years to come.

Orthodontics for Adults

It’s never too late for a beautiful smile!

Orthodontic treatment is for everyone! There has never been a better time to consider orthodontic treatment, at any age. It’s time to treat yourself to the beautiful, healthy, and confident smile that you deserve. At Lawless Orthodontics we work with patients of all ages, including adults. Our adult patients are growing in numbers each and every day. Did you know that according to the American Association of Orthodontists, one in five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21? Adult patients choosing orthodontics not only want to feel better about themselves, but they also know how important oral health is to maintaining overall physical health. The smile you have always dreamed of is now within your reach!

Is Orthodontic Treatment Right For Me At My Age?

You should consider orthodontics if you have crowded or spaced teeth. These are conditions that are often easily and efficiently addressed with treatment. Crowded teeth are difficult to keep clean, and this can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, bone loss, and recession. If your teeth don’t fit together properly, you may be experiencing abnormal wear on your teeth, or even jaw joint problems. Any concern that you feel is not giving you your best smile is a reason to see Dr. Lawless. You deserve to feel confident each and every day, in all that you do, and a beautiful, healthy smile is one sure way to help you feel your best.

What are my options?

Orthodontics for adults has never been better. With today’s technology treatment is more efficient and comfortable than ever before. Our treatment plans are customized for each patient, and our caring team is sensitive to the needs of our adult patients. Though we offer the traditional silver braces, you may prefer a less noticeable aesthetic option. We are here to discuss the best option for you. You may even be a candidate for Invisalign! With Invisalign, even your closest family and friends may never know you are in treatment.

How long will orthodontic treatment take?

Though treatment times vary, the average is about 24 months. This may be different from what you experienced when your child had braces. There are a few reasons for this. As an adult your jaws are no longer growing, and there may other factors to considerer such as bone loss and recession. Though rare, sometimes we may need to discuss additional procedures like orthognathic surgery to correctly align your jaw. You may be missing teeth, and we must consult with additional specialists to determine the best course of care. Rest assured that Dr. Lawless and our team are here to provide you with the very best result and experience with respect, care, and understanding.
